Art in Bologna from XV and XVII Century [Art History]

Irene Graziani

Bologna’s geographical location and its ancient, renowned university have always made it a strategic center politically and a hub for the dissemination of high intellectual values. Its cultural importance is evidenced by a rich artistic heritage. This course focuses on the centuries between the 15th and early 17th, aiming to recount the stories of the main figures in a history that often had international significance.

The methodological approach will focus on the most effective contextual reading of artistic production. Therefore, classroom lectures will be supplemented with on-site visits to palaces, churches, and museums. These visits are fundamental for a “live” study of the artworks, intended to stimulate a more direct and critical reflection on the stylistic, iconographic, and technical choices made by artists to meet the demands of their patrons.
